Unfortunately, the incredible headache is more common in women. Researchers found that women are four times more likely to suffer from migraines than men.
Why it happened, it was still a mystery. However, two new studies began to uncover the cause, explaining what happens in our bodies when exposed to migraine. Perhaps this research will pave the way for new treatments.
In one study published in the journal Neurology, researchers looked at the role of hormone fluctuation causes migraines, as most women tend to be more likely to have when the menstrual period.
They evaluated 114 women who used to get regular migraines and 223 women who did not. Volunteers are asked to make a daily journal about their headaches.
Volunteers were tested for hormone measurements daily over a period of one year for a total of 10 years.
The researchers realized that migraine is more prone to occur among women who decreased estrogen when the days before their menstrual period. This also explains why men can not have the same headache frequency.
A second study published in the British Medical Journal found that women who have migraines are more likely to have a serious health condition, even including fatal heart problems, than women who are unusual or do not have migraines.
The women who can suffer from migraine, 50 percent more likely to have serious health problems such as heart attack or stroke.
Although the relationship between headaches with a heart condition discovered remains unclear, the researchers suspect it may have something to do with genetics or inflammation in the body.
Although there is currently no drug is practically effective to cure migraines, gain a better understanding of the drivers and effects of migraine, will help researchers one step closer to finding a solution.
